SPP India - New Rules for 2013 intakes

About Canada | Facts | Education System | Why Canada? | Cost | Colleges | Universities | Student Partner Program (SPP)

Canadian High Commission in India has announced changes in Study Visa requirements under SPP & University categories for 2013 intakes as mentioned below:

New SPP rules for 2013 intakes for Indian Students:

  • Proof of Tuition Fee payment: Copy of receipts for tuition payment (ONE Semester/ONE Year - as asked by the SPP institution)
  • Proof of funds (Living Expenses): You MUST demonstrate the purchase of a special Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution (Scotia Bank), in the amount of $10,000 CAD to cover living expenses for your first year in Canada (Check below for information on how to obtain a GIC).
  • Language Ability: IELTS test results taken within last 24 months with overall band not less than 6.0, with no individual band lower than 5.5 bands in any module.

Under SPP in India, the following requirement are still the same:

  • Passed out from 12th Grade in the last TWO years or completed Bachelor's Degree in the last FIVE years,
  • Scored overall 6.0 bands in IELTS in last TWO years,
  • Have atleast 50% score in their latest qualification,
  • Graduated with NOT more than TWO backlogs per year,
  • Previously never denied Canadian Study Visa.

Here is how you can obtain a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC):

According to Citizenship and Immigration Canada guidelines, you will require approximately $10,000 CAD per year, not including tuition fees, to cover your living expenses. This requirement is fulfilled through the purchase of a participating GIC, and evidence that you have paid your tuition.

At present, Scotiabank is the only participating Canadian financial institution. Apply for the Scotiabank Student GIC Program, by visiting their website at http://www.scotiabank.com/ca/en/0,,5698,00.html, to learn more about the GIC and download the GIC Application form. Once your Scotiabank Student GIC has been opened, you may transfer funds to your account in Canada by using any bank in India in which you hold your account.
